Nov 14, 2010 – Sarasota, Florida – November 9, 2010 – WG Wood Products has introduced a new sliding door wall cabinet in its line of products. The custom-made cabinet and wood shelf company found a need for the new item after creating one for a special client request.

“These wooden cabinets fit a variety of uses.” said Michael Sloan, president of WG Wood Products. “They work well as a sliding door medicine cabinet or a kitchen cabinet. They can be mounted in or on the wall as needed.”

The customer can choose the cabinet size between 12 and 20 inches wide and 18 to 78 inches tall. The number of shelves is variable with the height of the cabinet. There are 10 different door styles available for the cabinet, which can be matched to the door and color style of other products available through the Florida-based manufacturer. Different items can be ordered in tandem with the sliding door wall cabinet to create a full set of matching pieces for any room in the home or office.
“One reason we felt a need to add this cabinet to our inventory is because there isn’t anything like it on the market,” said Sloan. “Very often people need extra cabinet space, but there is not enough room to mount it on a wall or swing open a door for access. This resolves that problem.”

Made from solid whitewood radiant pine, sliding door cabinets can be purchased unfinished or finished. If the finished surface is preferred, the customer can choose from among 20 colors of stain. A vinyl sealer and double coating of lacquer are also applied to the product, if desired.

For more than nine years, Tim and Charity Figallo 's 120 square feet of kitchen space served its purpose - albeit tightly - feeding the couple's family, acting as a play area and entertaining countless friends.

"Our kitchen was small, but we made due," said Charity, 38. "We knew one day we would get around to fixing it up."

Renovation on the kitchen started in July 2007 when Tim decided to knock down a wall to create a space for a countertop and bar area. The hole in the wall led to expanding the kitchen by about half, upgrading the appliances, adding new lights and installing granite counter tops.

"I knew the only way to get the project done was to get it started," said Tim, 37. "Otherwise, I would have never done anything."

Tim gave up part of the garage so the kitchen could grow. He moved the water heater into the garage, relocated the washer and dryer and installed new windows.

For their efforts, the Figallo's won Best Kitchen makeover in The Virginian-Pilot's 2009 Do-It-Yourself Contest.

The co mpetition awards $500 to winners in each of five categories - Best Kitchen, Best Bath, Best Low-Budget Project, Best Outdoor Project and Best Theme Room - with an additional $500 going to the overall winner.

"I entered right at the last minute and didn't think we would ever hear anything back," Charity said. "We were both shocked and surprised to hear we had won."

Tim, a Navy aircraft mechanic, spent his nights and weekends working on the kitchen. During the 18 months that the kitchen was under construction, he even went on a three-month deployment.

"I had to keep the kitchen functional this whole time," he said. "At one point the... countertops were pieces of plywood."

The Figallos spent about $15,000 for kitchen makeover in their Windsor Woods ranch. They saved money by purchasing at scratch-and-dent sales and waiting until things were marked down. Tim's grandmother gifted the couple the granite to use on the counters.

The now-230-square-foot kitchen houses a large island with additional cabinet space and a seating area.

"I learned to swing a hammer at a young age," Tim said of his DIY skills. "I just keep working at something until I figure it out."

The Figallos would like to finish a few details before calling their kitchen makeover complete. Tim is still adding trim around the windows and floor.

"Eventually we will create another half bar that goes into the dining room," Charity said. "It's a work in progress, but it's still my favorite room in the house."

My husband, Tim, is the perpetual do-it-yourselfer . I feel completely blessed to have such a handy husband.

Our kitchen was a measly 120 square feet , but I have churned out thousands of meals in my postage-stamp-sized kitchen and supervised many craft and school projects from this small space. After nearly nine years we finally began the renovation . My husband was generous enough to give up some of his garage space to expand our tiny kitchen to 230 square feet.

My contribution was the design and layout and choosing all the colors and materials that would go into our new dream kitchen on a $15,000 budget. I also was the clean-up crew .

My best advice would be to never settle for full price on anything . Shop around; you will be amazed at how inexpensive things can be when you put a little extra effort into research. We shopped all the scratch-and-dent sales, wholesale home-improvement stores (like Home Emporium) and, of course, all of the labor was done by my husband.

When I say labor, I mean demolition of two walls, removal and relocation of a water heater and washer and dryer (which had to have all new plumbing and a new drain) relocation of outlets, wiring for new recess lighting, the hanging of drywall, the widening of our main kitchen window, cutting out brick to add an additional side window, tiling our beautiful travertine floors, installing a gorgeous back splash by cutting 120 subway tiles from standard 12-by-12-inch marble tiles I found on clearance at Home Depot, installation of cabinets and guess what? A pot filler to boot.

This project would easily have cost $65,000, but because of my husband we have this amazing kitchen . I want to cry now that I am seeing on paper just how much work he has done. I love my kitchen, but I love my husband even more .

Time for Kitchen Design

Most have seen those “to die for” kitchens showcased in magazines like Country Kitchen Ideas, Kitchen & Bath Showcase and Kitchen Design. You know, the ones with the glitzy galley kitchen or the more traditional granite counters, wainscot and tile backsplash surrounded by cherry cabinets and elaborate cooking stations—all beautifully lit with recessed ceiling and under-cabinet lighting.

Some of those showpiece kitchens can be found right here in mid-Michigan, designed by Dave Hagerman, owner of Hagerman Kitchens, Inc. in Lansing.

Hagerman, a Certified Kitchen Designer (CKD), founded his company in 1993. Over the years his designs have won national awards and garnered attention from professional publications. He’s attracted clients like Jeff Smith, of the Frugal Gourmet, whose career on public television ended in the 1990s. He even once redesigned the kitchen in the governor’s residence for the State of Michigan.

Hagerman, the son of a carpenter, gained experience by working at a variety of job sites many summer days with his father. It was on those projects that he fashioned the start of his career by drawing remodeling jobs.

“I loved studying blueprints. I think that is where I began to enjoy the drawing and design part of the process, and developing my interior design skills,” Hagerman says. “Learning how to build cabinets as a young man helped me understand how everything fits together.”

Hagerman’s knowledge of architecture is evident in his designs, but it’s the functionality and versatility of his contemporary and traditional kitchens that are the hallmarks of his style.

“The Food Network has inspired a lot of people with great ideas, but it’s important that a kitchen designer understands the work flow of a kitchen, such as moving from the dishwasher to the cabinets to the food prep areas. Convenience is important,” Hagerman says.

He adds that good architecture remains long after fads come and go. “It’s important for designs have real character and interest.”

Traditional kitchen design is still the top pick of homeowners across mid-Michigan, Hagerman says, with cherry cabinets and granite countertops all the rage. However, maple has made a resurgence because it can be painted either cream or beige.

“People love traditional but with some embellishments. Across the rest of the state we are seeing more of a refined traditional with some contemporary design work. It’s a softer look with less of a high tech feel,” Hagerman says.

Open kitchens are very much in style, he adds. Hagerman’s clients want to be able to cook, entertain and eat in one centralized location.

Hagerman, who works by himself, launched his own private label line of cabinetry three years ago. That allows him to add special custom details not always available from the other name brand lines of cabinets he sells. He uses a cabinetmaker in the Detroit area, familiar with his architectural style, to produce his custom cabinets. 2009-oct-hagerman1

Granite remains the most popular countertop material, and the thicker the better, he says, with some clients asking for two-inch thick tops. Marble isn’t as popular since it requires too much maintenance for most of his clients; it’s also prone to nicks and scratches.

“We are also doing more with glass, which you can do a lot of fun things with. We use it on a lot of bar tops. It gives you the illusion there’s nothing there because you can see right through it,” Hagerman says.

The design process begins when Hagerman meets with potential clients to start discussing and drawing plans. He uses several computer-aided drafting and design programs, including Squiggle® and Google’s™ SketchUp®, to create 3D models.

“With SketchUp® you can literally walk right through the new design, open the drawers and sit at the island,” he says.

Once the design plans are approved, Hagerman advises clients to hire a general contractor to supervise the day-to-day construction activities. He also recommends clients hire subcontractors that are familiar with his designs.

“They know how the trim works and how we like the electrical. They are just accustomed to how our kitchen designs go together,” Hagerman adds.

While the economy has certainly slowed down new home construction across mid-Michigan, Hagerman says people are excitedly tackling smaller remodel projects—and the kitchen is typically a good place to start.

“Fortunately our workload has been very steady. Obviously there has been a shift to remodel projects away from new home installations, but a particular strength for us has been the northern Michigan vacation home market,” Hagerman says.

His quarter of a century of experience designing kitchens has taught Hagerman there will always be crooked walls and uneven floors to deal with on site, and even more importantly, homeowners who are prone to over-estimating their budget.

“Designing with a budget in mind, whatever that budget may be, that is really the starting point. I always speak with my clients about what they want and then whether the budget is compatible with it.”

6 tips to put your kitchen in the right light

Want to create an eye-catching kitchen that adds value to your home, too? Let there be light, but not too much, according to kitchen-design and lighting experts.

Here are some dynamite tips from Frankie Cameron, national account manager for Bellacor Lighting based in Mendota Heights, Minn., and Mark Lambert, owner of DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen in Bellingham, Wash.

1. Start underneath

"The least-expensive, easiest layer to add is under-cabinet lighting,"says Cameron. She suggests low-voltage xenon bulbs in varying lengths to light counters or islands below shelves or cabinets, but recommends steering clear of small "puck"lights. "They give your counters and shelves these odd spots of light and you can see some models plainly,"she says.

2. Choose a ceiling light for now and later

"If your ceiling mount fixture is outdated, replace it with a newer model that has a nice finish and gives off a nice light, but isn't overly embellished,"says Cameron. "You want to make sure it will work with a contemporary or traditional décor."

3. Pick out the popular stuff

For mood-setting (or ambient) lights, Lambert says you can't go wrong with two established trends: the pendant light and the track light.

"One of the more interesting brands of track lighting is Tech Lighting — a bit costly, but very cool stuff over an island or counter,"he says.

Glass pendant lights have also been holding their own in the kitchen market for some time, says Cameron, because they are fresh and pretty and can still work with different décors.

4. Decorate, but impersonally

A little decorative lighting is a nice touch in a kitchen and that, too, can be achieved with art-glass pendant lamps, says Cameron: "Many of the handblown fixtures can really add to the overall aesthetic in a kitchen."

5. Suit someone else

Whether you're choosing modest or lavish decorative lights, remember that you're not looking for the style that most appeals to you but for the one that's most likely to enhance the value of the kitchen.

6. Stick to one look

There are a lot of really nice, really pretty kitchen lights on the market, and potential buyers will probably expect to see some of them in the finest kitchens. That said, make sure any replacement lights you purchase match the current décor or are neutral enough to work with the wishes of the future homeowners

Going green in the kitchen

After living in their Bardonia home for more than 16 years, the Rodriguez family was looking for a change. Like many other homeowners in the Hudson Valley, instead of moving, they decided to stay put and renovate. Their major motivation, however, wasn't merely more space or better amenities: Several family members have allergies that include asthma, so they wanted a home - particularly their kitchen - that would not only be an allergy-free zone, but give them a durable, beautiful and environmentally sound place for them to cook and entertain guests.

They turned to Nyack architect and kitchen designer Gemini Watanabe of Summit Street Design, for a greener gathering space. Watanabe works on sustainable design by using environmentally sensitive materials and products, such as cabinets made with soy-based glues, energy-efficient appliances, low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints and all-natural alternatives to traditional products, like a linoleum made from linseed oil and pine rosin.

"One of the reasons the family wanted to do their kitchen over was they wanted a place in their home that was healthy for everyone," she says.

On the practical side, the couple also needed more storage space than their old kitchen allowed, and better traffic flow. A single, narrow doorway separating the kitchen from the dining room acted liked a bottleneck, keeping guests clogged in the kitchenwhen the couple entertained guests, which was often.

By removing the wall between the rooms, and anchoring a slim island in the middle of the kitchen, Watanabe was immediately able to improve the traffic flow. She designed a custom-birch storage center to hold the couple's cooking utensils, and a small television. She added display shelves for cookbooks, and a work desk. The unit fills an entire wall of the new kitchen, which is painted in a meditative shade of green.

With the practicalities taken care of, Watanabe tackled the larger issue: eradicating harmful toxins from the kitchen to give it maximum appeal and enjoyment for the whole family.

The Sustainable Kitchen

The kitchen in Brandi and Adam Secher's Highland Park home is the model of green living gone luxe. Two different materials with sumptuous miens - namely dark-chocolate Paperstone, a recycled cardboard that looks like honed granite, and deeply burnished recycled mesquite - clad the countertops for visual intrigue. Neil Kelly wood cabinets with a creamy white finish and antiqued bronze moldings line the walls, a backsplash of frosted recycled glass tiles in topaz and white play to the two hues of the cabinets, and bamboo floors are stained an intensely rich shade of amber.

Gleaming stainless-steel Energy Star appliances give the plush materials that are traditional in style, though not substance, a dose of hard-edged urban chic. The contrast takes the space from a little too fussy to au courant.

"We wanted it to be classic and timeless but also young and hip," says Adam. But the couple, who did an all-encompassing green renovation on their 1962 Highland Park home when they bought it last year, also wanted it to be totally, uncompromisingly sustainable.

The cabinets are formaldehyde-free and sport non-toxic finishes, and all the other materials are the latest eco-friendly kitchen offerings that they could find. Most were purchased though Green Depot in Chicago. Even the stunning furniture in the kitchen's eat-in dining area is in fact sustainable, custom made out of 200-year-old reclaimed teak from The Golden Triangle in Chicago.

"We did it to create a clean and healthy home for our family," says Adam. "I didn't want to put anything in the house - be it cabinets, flooring or carpet - that could give off noxious fumes that take years to evaporate and be a potential health risk for my family."

The Secher family's recent remodel demonstrates a notable trend driving this new "green" economy.

While the housing slump has slowed the demand for luxury kitchen build-outs and remodels, a move to employ eco-friendly materials and sustainable products that promote energy efficiency is on the rise.

According to a recent American Institute of Architect's Home Design Trends Survey, kitchen products that promote sustainability, such as renewable-material flooring, countertops and recycling centers, were reported to be increasing in popularity, or holding their own from a year ago, while declining in popularity were built-in coffee/espresso makers, warming drawers, duplicate appliances, pot filler water faucets, natural stone countertops and upper-end appliances.

Joe Silver, a partner in Green Depot in Chicago's Logan Square (which he co-founded in 2005 as Greenmaker Supply but merged with this national chain last November), doesn't need survey results to know that eco-friendly kitchen jobs are doing more than holding their own. His showroom, ostensibly the city's largest retailer of green cabinetry and home remodeling products (and part of the nation's first "green" chain of building supply stores) is thriving. "I'm almost afraid to admit it, but business is pretty good right now," he says.

In fact, business is so good that he doesn't have enough time to "green" his own kitchen, the only weak spot in the new Highland Park home he was able to snag in a foreclosure from a recently bankrupt builder. He wants to trade out the upscale granite countertops, contemporary cherry cabinets and oak-plank floors for green alternatives, such as a recycled-paper countertops, formaldehyde-free cabinets with non-toxic finishes and bamboo flooring. And a sleek recycled-glass backsplash would make a nice substitute for the plainly painted wall that remains nude behind his sink and screams for something snazzier.

Silver carries all these products in his store, so finding what he wants at a good price isn't the issue. "The trouble is, I can't just get rid of it because that wouldn't be very green either, so I'm making plans," he explains. "I'm hoping my fabricator can resell the granite countertops, and I'm trying to find a home for the cabinets and oak flooring thought my network of contractors."

Evanston architect Nathan Kipnis is the first to attest that green efforts, especially in the kitchen, are the real winners in this economic downturn. "Business is good for us, including kitchens, because of our focus," says the architect, who has specialized in sustainable design ever since founding his own namesake firm 16 years ago. "Knock on reclaimed wood," he quips.

Increasing the economic advantages of going green is the fact that green cabinets, long considered the priciest expenditure when opting for green features in a kitchen, are "not necessarily more expensive these days," says interior designer Adele Lampert of Page One Interiors, who carries two green cabinet lines in her Barrington showroom.

Just a few years ago, they were considered a niche product and the choices you had were far more limited in terms of styles and price points, notes Kipnis. "But today, there is such a big demand for them that the options are increasing exponentially and the costs are coming down. You can find them at the same cost, a little more or a lot more."

And, you can find them virtually everywhere. "If they don't have them yet, they're about to add them," Kipnis says.

This is all great news for the Earth, but can be challenging to homeowners who want to "green up" the cooking space. With so many choices and options, where does one begin?

We surveyed our panel of North Shore experts and put together a little "green" guide to kitchen maintenance and décor. Here's what you need to know to make your kitchen both stylish and sustainable.

APPLIANCES: Upgrade to Energy Star appliances, which can provide savings of anywhere from 10 to 50 percent in greenhouse-gas emissions, resources and energy costs according to the government agency's website (www.energystar.gov). To save more money, avoid the "bells and whistles," such as in-door water and ice dispensers. Find out about possible rebate programs and incentives at www.energystar.gov. Also, remember to "right-size it." "Don't get a giant refrigerator or six burners if you aren't going to really use them, says Kipnis, pointing out that many gourmet kitchens remain under-utilized.

FAUCETS: Install efficient, low-flow water faucets that have the U.S. EPA's Watersense label, indicating they have met government standards for water efficiency. Many faucets can be fitted with $10-$20 aerators that cut water usage. And don't forget to turn off your water the second you are done using it.

WASTE: Kipnis is a strong believer that every kitchen should have a recycling center. He also thinks composting, which cuts down on waste, is a smart move and advises adding a holding area to the kitchen for refuse that can be treated in this manner. CABINETS: Cabinetry is often the biggest expense when building new or remodeling a kitchen. "Though they range in cost, since prices can go from $20,000 to $120,000, they can certainly account for 50 percent of your budget," notes Kipnis. Choose cabinets that are certified by the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association (KCMA) Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP), which gives companies tangible ways to support sustainability in every step of the manufacturing and distribution process and evaluates the end product through a point system. A list of certified companies can be found at its website (www.kcma.org) and includes some of the biggest names in the industry. Also, choose wood that is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, which means it comes from a managed forest.

Michelle Silver Peebles, a kitchen and bath designer at Green Depot, also recommends utilizing woods that can be replenished rapidly. Bamboo, for example, reaches full growth in three to five years, and liptus, a South American species that grows to full height within 12 to 16 years (instead of the 80 to 100 years most hardwoods require). Or use reclaimed wood, which can often be found at salvage yards though a simple Internet search. Keep in mind that the closer to home the materials can be found, the better. Green experts generally apply a 100- to 500-mile radius on such transactions; if you have to transport it from a remote location, that raises the carbon impact. Also, if it is extracted from a prior location and millwork or refabrication is involved, that work should be done locally as well.

COUNTERTOPS: Use a solid surface material rather than tile, which requires grout and is harder to clean. Examples include granite and engineered stone such as CaesarStone, which is made of quartz, and recycled materials such as glass or shredded-paper products cast in resin. These are also nonporous, which helps stave off bacteria. Kipnis is partial to concrete, which is hard, durable, attractive and can be locally manufactured and personalized with interesting dyes and aggregates such as glass, mirrors, shells and more. Some use wood or butcher-block as built-in cutting boards though Kipnis warns they should "consider its source and make sure it is Formaldehyde-free."

TILES: Use recycled tiles from a salvage yard (or closeout tiles bought at a deep discount) to create your own designs for a backsplash or even an entire wall. Recycled glass tiles come in myriad options today, but to be truly green, look for versions that are made with at least 30- to 40-percent post-consumer materials.

BACKSPLASHES: Tiles are an option, but this is also a chance to get creative. In a home located in Sturgeon Bay, Wis., that he designed for an Evanston couple, Kipnis used local river rock set in grout as a backsplash, and when remodeling a North Shore lakefront home, reused a beautifully patterned tin ceiling as a backsplash in the new kitchen.

FLOORING: Use tile, Linoleum, laminate or sustainable woods such as bamboo or cork. Linoleum, which is made of linseed oil (a renewable resource) and is hypoallergenic, is a great alternative thanks to its low cost, solid environmental benefits, care-free qualities and high style quotient. Kipnis likes Marmoleum, which is similar to Linoleum but is made from natural materials.

Bamboo "is slightly more expensive than your standard oak but competitive with maple, cherry and walnut and cheaper than cork," notes Jason Dalbey, co-owner of a new Glenview flooring showroom, Floor Coverings International. "It comes from tree bark, and they harvest it in sections only once every seven years so the tree keeps growing. And like wood, it's extremely durable and comes in varied grains and hues."

LIGHTING: The optimal kitchen has lots of natural light, but all kitchens are not optimally designed. Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs, and consider adding LED lighting if possible. Though both of these types of lighting are more expensive, both last longer and consume less energy. In the case of the LED bulbs, the costs are significantly more expensive but pay off in terms of longevity. "While CFLs average $4 to $5 a piece, LEDs cost about $100 each but come with a 50,000 hour rated life so you will virtually never have to replace them," says Kipnis.

Kitchen-cabinet romance

That’s a pretty good quote. Another one that I feel compelled to mention anytime I’m about to serve a meal is a Chinese proverb: “One cannot refuse to eat just because there is a chance of being choked.”

I always explain to my guests that maybe the choking chance is slightly greater than normal when you’re sitting at my table. The words I like to say quietly to myself when I sit down to a major event-type meal, like Thanksgiving Dinner, or the I-got-two-rejection-notices-in-the-mail-today-and-my boyfriend-hasn’t- called-for-two-hours: “Never eat more than you can lift,” first spoken by Miss Piggy.

All quotations aside, though, some of the best humor and pretty much all of the best food come from a kitchen. Traditionally it’s the heart of the home, especially nowadays if you’ve got a flat-screen TV and wireless access in there. But usually the kitchen tends to be the messiest, most trafficked room in the house. Short of a daycare center, a brothel or an artists’ studio, I can’t think of a place that gets any more smelly, splattering, salacious activity than the kitchen. It gets used up pretty quickly and starts to show its age. But there are always a bunch of new gadgets, technologies and aesthetic possibilities fervently urging themselves upon us when we consider the use and appearance of the sacred chamber that is our kitchen.

This is where Steve Morelock comes into the picture. IT was not only that it displayed excellent growth over the past three years that helped Kitcheners Kitchens become the winner of the 2009 City of Sydney Business of the Year Award

It was also the company's innovative business model, its commitment to the community and its commitment to the environment.

And it wasn't a simple achievement for the small Alexandria-based kitchen design company.

The 20,000 small to medium sized businesses in the City of Sydney local government now account for 12.5 per cent of NSW's gross domestic product and nearly 5 per cent of the nation's GDP.

Reflecting the diversity, and the depth, of small businesses in the area, the annual City of Sydney Small Business Awards includes 24 categories, plus the overall Sustainability Award (won this year by the Museum of Contemporary Art) and the Business of the Year Award.

Kitcheners Kitchens was started about five years ago by Michael Kitchener -- in his bedroom.

Because the operation was so small and finances were limited, he took the unusual step for a kitchen design company of not opening a showroom.

"Traditional kitchen companies would have as their business model a showroom to generate interest and customers," Mr Kitchener said. "But I couldn't afford to open one when I started. I still can't afford seven or eight showrooms so I rely heavily on the web to generate inquiries.

"For two-third's of the company's lifespan we didn't have a showroom, and now we have just one in Alexandria and another in Melbourne, but we still rely mostly on trade through the internet."

Mr Kitchener said that only about 2 per cent of his customers initially come through the door.

"Their first step is to go on the internet," he said. "About 70 or 80 per cent buy their kitchens from me before going to our showroom and about 20 per cent of them come in after, just to check things out, but more than half of them never set foot in the showroom."

Another innovation was the way Mr Kitchener tracked and monitored orders.

"Monitoring business is a challenge right through the process of design, manufacturing and installation," said Mr Kitchener.

"Another thing that impressed the judges was our strategic plan.

"Every six months we have a managerial meeting, then a staff meeting, to review our steps to determine whether it's working or whether we need to introduce new plans."

One of the business's community projects is its involvement with the Mo-vember campaign to support research into prostrate cancer after a senior staff member came through the battle.

Another community project involved fitting out the school canteen at Mt Sinai College in Maroubra, and getting involved in the renowned chef Stephanie Alexander's national Kitchen Garden Foundation for primary schools.

On the environmental front, Mr Kitchener said that his business was the first kitchen enterprise to be carbon neutral.

"We did a 12-month analysis of our energy usage to determine our carbon footprint and bought the carbon offsets to compensate for it.

"We've got involved with Climate Friendly which invests in Third World countries, such as building windmills in rural towns in India."

But Mr Kitchener believes his most important contribution to the environment so far was to start introducing environmentally friendly products.

"Many glues and resins used in kitchen cabinet emit formaldehydes, so we've looked for the manufacturers that have developed boards that have zero formaldehyde emissions," he said.

As well, there is the small but very public gesture of planting a tree for every kitchen sold.
